First Official Tour

The Hop Haus is taking on a if all its own. Today we entertained our first tour. The guests were interested in hop farming, both for themselves and for the use of our future crop.

New adventure. New, new, new.

May we find the gumption, the wisdom to navigate this blessed chapter.

Research For Agribusiness Expansion

We are currently doing some homework regarding the expansion of our hop yard. Our intuition is telling us to switch from aluminum poles on the trellis system to timber. Our hearts were first captured by the hop fields of Europe. Though the aluminum seems to fit the bill structurally, it does not bring the old world feel to the table. Call us romantics, but there is something ethereal,  something soulful about using as many natural materials as possible.

So... We hunt for economic timber that will last, that will survive the winds and won't fill the ozone with excess fumes due to transportation.
The hunt is on.

The remaining components of our trellis system have truly delighted us. No changes anticipated there.

The rhizomes, as a whole, have come through. The cone production, as advertised, is not overwhelming this year. Which is ok. We quietly hoped for a bumper crop but, in truth,  it has been a 'productive' year for our household. A massive harvest and marketing campaign may have actually been too much for 2013.

We have a couple buyers lined up that should take our harvest off our hands. Better to meet the expectations of a few than to come up short for many, is our belief. Next season, we have been told the harvest should be upwards of 75% of our potential! Exciting prospect!

In the weeks and months ahead we will decide the capacity of our expansion as well as fine tune the rhizome compliment for the year ahead.

We are dazzled at the progress we were able to make through the 2013 growing season and we eagerly anticipate the improvements we would like to impart for 2014.

Thank you again to everyone who loaned equipment, contributed sweat and brain cells to this undertaking! It has been so much fun to share the journey!

Hops and Lavender, looking good

These photos were intended for a post about two months ago but we got busy somehow...
oh yeah. I hear a baby can do that :)

Here is a glance at some of our lavender goodies and some of the hop shots, as well.

At the time, the Bear was excited that the hops were surpassing his height... now many are as tall as the house.

Still, a few rhizomes just cleared the surface. I think they will come in stronger next year. Though they will likely not add to our cone harvest this year, it was still encouraging to see their leaves pop through the dirt!

Summer is Coming On

The summer solstice is just days away and the signs of the season are upon us!

The first of two lavender harvests are in motion,  the lawn is lush,  the garden is in,  the baby is due any day and the hops are climbing high.

It has certainly been an eventful year for our household and the momentum looks to continue.

Ted did a fantastic job of pruning the hops on Friday,  clearing some weeds in the area and giving them space to grow. We have had a great deal of moist weather in recent weeks,  but our crops are less bothered by the inconvenience than we would have thought.

If baby bird holds off a few more days,  we will head to a continuing education course offered by OSU Extension,  right here in Bainbridge.

A friend recently commented that it must be wonderful to be following a dream. I have to smile now,  as I did then, because it really is! Two years ago we had no idea we would be in a log cabin,  starting a hop and lavender farm...  Now we can't imagine anything else for our growing family.

Life is good ;)

Enjoy your week!

Lavender is in the Ground

The weather, the new baby in the way,  and limited hours of the day caused the Lavender to go in the ground in stages...  But we got it all in! We opted to line the Lavender under the support cables of the hop trellis system to create a visible barrier for kiddos.

Though the kids (ours and neighbor kids) are small now,  they will only get more adventurous as they grow. Our hope is that the visible barrier of lavender will help to keep everyone safe, avoid walking into or running into the cables.

Slowly but surely,  everything is coming together quite nicely!

Gonna Get a Garden, Afterall

This update is a little slow coming false labor has kept us busy the last week or so. Still,  I wanted to celebrate and share–– WE HAVE A GARDEN!!!

The move last year left us garden free for a year. I can only say that the time fueled our desires for this year's garden!
Enjoy a couple snapshots:
