Maple Syrup Tapping and Tasting

Yesterday we explored a bit of the local area and found a Maple tree tapping Festival in Burton.

Ted and Grandpa Andy were able to drill and tap a tree, install a collection bucket for the sap.

We learned that 50 gallons of sap will yield 1 gallon of syrup.

The family that volunteered at the event were all very informative and patient with our questions.

Perhaps we will explore further next month with their pancake eating party! Let us know if that is something you would like to get in on ;)

Not surprisingly, Grandpa made some new friends and is rumored to be included in this Wednesday's write up in the local Gazette. * Pics to follow*

Here are a couple more shots from the day:

Wagons and Wine, the Adventures Ahead

Wagons and Wine, though delayed one week due to Hurricane Sandy, was well received!

We were really surprised how many folks were able to attend the RAIN DATE and that the weather was so warm and sunny - quite a contrast to the week prior!

I believe that every kid here asked me if they could either 1. Stay or 2. When they could come back! If happy kids make for happy parents, I'm going to declare the event a huge success!!

The day after W&W, we had some help patching the roof aafter the storm damage. Thanks Brother!

And we have tried not to skip a beat in planning for the future use of the farm.

To commemorate our anniversary yesterday, we ordered our first round of hop rhizomes. With any luck, we will have them delivered and in the ground in mid March, hopping into our new farm status by the summer.

Anyone who has an interest in hops, let us know! We will welcome all the extra hands we can muster for next year's Harvest Party!!!!!!!!!!
