Babywearing Bohemians

You may be wondering about our new passion for all things Babywearing. In truth, we wore the Bear very early in a Moby (stretchy, great for skin to skin early on) wrap and graduated to the Ergo (bright green, we use it all the time) when he was a couple months old. But now we are getting serious.

If you haven't had the pleasure of some quality time with the Bird lately, you may not be aware that he is a solid, big baby. At three months, he was 23#. I appreciate this does not sound like a lot of weight, but in tiny human form, 23# is equivalent to an anvil! And I've been trying to bounce him around, nurse him, pop him in and out of the car, balance him on one hip.

I'm going to go ahead and confess to you friends and family, I've thrown my back out. I've pinched nerves, been nearly immobilized several times over.

I may be slow to come to the realization, but it is now clear that we need some tools to safely tote this boy around... Insert safe Babywearing. The moby (stretchy wrap) is great when babies are small. The Bird is not small. The Ergo (bright green, has clips on it) is wonderful for grocery, running around, quick pops in and out, etc. Babywearing (weird term) with a woven wrap is most supportive to mom and baby for longer periods of time.

Of course, Target doesn't sell a woven wrap. You can't pick one up at Walmart. Some hunting must be done. All things have acronyms and differing weave styles to accommodate differing needs. Fiber content varies a great deal. Then there is the matter of length. Oh man, it's like being tied up in a few sheets. But we will learn :)
Apparently there are many website's, Facebook groups and actual real–live people who do this on a regular basis. We are learning that one could get pretty invested in the topic. And poor Bird, all he wants is to be held and fed, like any baby. We are going to make it happen!!!

So, if you see is doing the 'hippie tie the baby on' dance, please feel free to point and laugh! It seems there is quite a learning curve with this madness.

Hopefully we can find a way to keep the baby happy and mama's back in good running order!

Here is what we have started:
